St Patrick's Day — history, traditions and how to celebrate

St Patrick's Day on the 17th March is the feast day of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and a celebration of Irish culture worldwide.

Who was St Patrick?

Patrick (c.385–461 AD) was a Christian missionary and bishop credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. He used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, which became the most enduring symbol of Irish identity.

Celebrating in the UK

While not a bank holiday in England, Scotland or Wales, St Patrick's Day is widely celebrated — particularly in cities with large Irish communities (London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham). Many pubs and bars hold events.
