HMRC Self Assessment — Who Needs to Do It and When

Self Assessment is the system HMRC uses to collect Income Tax from people whose tax is not automatically deducted through PAYE.

Who needs to file

  • Self-employed people with income over £1,000 per year
  • Company directors
  • People with income over £100,000
  • Those with income from renting out property
  • Those claiming the High Income Child Benefit Charge
  • People with complex tax affairs

Key deadlines

  • 5 October: register for Self Assessment if you haven't before
  • 31 October: paper return deadline
  • 31 January: online return deadline and payment deadline
