Auto-enrolment means eligible workers are automatically enrolled in a workplace pension. Since 2012, this has expanded pension coverage to millions of workers who previously had no private pension.
Who is eligible
Workers aged 22–State Pension age earning over £10,000 per year from a single employer are automatically enrolled. Workers earning less, or outside this age range, can opt in voluntarily and the employer must still contribute.
Minimum contributions (2024/25)
- Total minimum: 8% of qualifying earnings
- Employer minimum: 3%
- Employee minimum: 5% (including 1% tax relief)
Should you opt out?
Opting out means giving up your employer's contribution — effectively taking a pay cut. This is rarely a good financial decision unless you're facing severe financial hardship. If you have debt, compare the employer contribution rate with your debt interest rate before deciding.
