Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common, long-term condition affecting the digestive system. It is estimated to affect around 1 in 5 people in the UK at some point.
Common symptoms
- Stomach cramps and pain
- Bloating
- Diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating between both
- Flatulence
Common triggers
Food and drink (particularly fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine, fizzy drinks), stress, hormonal changes, and certain medications can all trigger symptoms. Keeping a food and symptom diary helps identify personal triggers.
Management
There is no cure for IBS, but symptoms can often be managed through diet, stress management and medication. The Low FODMAP diet, developed by Monash University, is evidence-based and helps many people with IBS.
Always speak to your GP to rule out other conditions before self-diagnosing IBS. Referral to a gastroenterologist or dietitian may be appropriate.
