Meal Planning — Why It Works and How to Start

Meal planning is the practice of deciding in advance what meals you will eat for the coming days or week, before shopping.

Why it works

  • Reduces food waste: you buy what you need and use what you buy
  • Saves money: less impulse-buying and fewer last-minute takeaway decisions
  • Saves time: one organised shop beats multiple rushed top-up trips
  • Reduces decision fatigue: the what-is-for-dinner question is already answered

How to start

Plan 5–7 dinners. Write a shopping list directly from the plan. Buy only what is on the list. Designate one or two flexible nights for leftovers.
