Home education (also called homeschooling) is legal in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Here is what you need to know.
Parents have a legal duty to ensure their child receives a full-time education suitable for their age, ability, aptitude and any special educational needs. This does not have to be at school — it can be provided at home. There is no requirement to follow the National Curriculum, use set hours, or register with the local authority (though some councils encourage voluntary registration).
If your child is currently in school, you must notify the headteacher in writing that you are removing them to home educate. The school must remove them from the roll.
Join a local or online home education community for support. Start with a loose routine (see our free homeschool daily schedule) and build structure over time.
