Council Tax — How It Works and How to Reduce Your Bill

Council tax is a local tax set by your local council to fund services such as rubbish collection, street cleaning, social care and local schools.

How it is calculated

Properties are placed in bands (A–H in England) based on an estimate of their 1991 value. Each council sets its own rate. Band D is used as the reference point.

Discounts and exemptions

  • 25% discount if only one adult lives in the property
  • 100% exemption for properties where all occupants are full-time students
  • Various reductions for low income, disability, and other circumstances (apply through your council's council tax support scheme)

Contact your local council to check your band, apply for a discount, or challenge a banding you believe is incorrect.
