Red envelopes explained — hongbao and lai see

A red envelope (known as hongbao in Mandarin and lai see in Cantonese) is a red packet containing a money gift, given at Lunar New Year and on other special occasions such as weddings and births. The gift of money inside is wrapped in red because the colour symbolises good luck, joy and the warding off of bad fortune.

Who gives them, and to whom

Traditionally, married adults and elders give red envelopes to children and to unmarried younger relatives, and employers may give them to staff. The gesture passes on good wishes and blessings for the year ahead, far more than it is about the money itself.

A little etiquette

• Give and receive with both hands as a sign of respect
• The amount is often a number considered lucky; numbers associated with bad luck (such as four, which sounds like 'death' in some languages) are usually avoided
• It's polite not to open the envelope in front of the giver
• Crisp, new banknotes are traditional
