Rangoli is a traditional South Asian art form in which patterns are created on the floor or a flat surface using coloured powder, flowers, petals, chalk or coloured rice. It is most commonly associated with Diwali.
Rangoli designs are created at the entrance to the home during Diwali to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and good fortune. The intricate geometric and floral patterns are believed to invite positive energy and blessings into the home. The more elaborate the rangoli, the greater the welcome.
Traditional rangoli uses coloured powder (ground limestone, turmeric, sindoor), rice flour, or flower petals. Modern rangoli often uses pre-packaged coloured sand, fabric dye powder, or even chalk. Stencils make intricate geometric patterns accessible to beginners. The most common motifs are lotus flowers, peacocks, diyas and geometric grids.
