Free school meals are provided to children whose families meet certain criteria. Eligibility differs across the UK nations.
England
In England, children in Reception to Year 2 in state schools receive universal free school meals. Older children are eligible if their parents receive certain benefits, including Universal Credit with household net earnings not exceeding £7,400 per year.
Other nations
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have different and in some cases more generous entitlements. Check with your child's school or local council for the rules in your area.
How to apply
Apply through your local council. Applications are usually processed quickly. Even if you are not sure you qualify, it costs nothing to apply.
Benefits and eligibility rules change. Always check gov.uk or contact Citizens Advice for current information.
