UK Employment Rights — A Plain-English Overview

Many employees are unaware of their legal rights at work. This overview covers the key entitlements.

Minimum wage

The National Living Wage applies to workers aged 21+. Rates increase annually in April — check current rates at gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates.

Holiday entitlement

Full-time workers are entitled to at least 28 days paid holiday per year (including bank holidays). Part-time workers receive a pro-rata equivalent.

Sick pay

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is paid from the 4th day of absence. Some employers offer enhanced sick pay — check your contract.
