The UK driving test is one of the most common formal assessments adults take. Preparation and knowing what to expect on the day makes a significant difference.
The theory test
50 multiple-choice questions (86% pass mark) plus a 75-clip hazard perception test. Revise using the official DVSA materials and app. The theory test certificate is valid for 2 years.
The practical test
Around 38 minutes. Includes: an eyesight check, 'show me, tell me' vehicle safety questions, around 40 minutes of driving including independent driving and a sat-nav section, and possibly a reverse parking, pulling up on the right or forward bay parking manoeuvre.
Faults
Up to 15 minor (driver) faults is a pass. One serious or dangerous fault is an automatic fail. Common serious faults: not checking mirrors, hesitation at junctions, ineffective observation at roundabouts.
On the day
- Bring: theory test pass certificate, provisional licence (both parts if photocard), glasses if you need them to drive
- Arrive 10 minutes early
- It's normal to feel nervous — the examiner wants you to pass
