A retirement party marks one of life's most significant milestones. Whether it's an office do, a family lunch or a large celebration, the key is making it personal to the retiree.
Getting started
- Ask the retiree what they want — some prefer a quiet lunch, others a big party
- Set a budget and stick to it
- Book a venue at least 8 weeks ahead
- Send invitations 4–6 weeks ahead
The speech
Keep it to 5–7 minutes. Structure: what they achieved, why they're loved by colleagues, a funny story, and a heartfelt wish for the next chapter. Avoid inside jokes only 3 people understand. Practise aloud at least twice.
Personal touches
- Memory book: ask guests to submit contributions in advance
- Photo display of career highlights
- Gift collection (single meaningful gift beats a random collection of mugs)
