Retirement Planning Basics — Getting Started

Retirement planning is best started early, but it is never too late to make a positive difference.

The State Pension

The full new State Pension (2024/25) is £221.20 per week. You need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions. Check your State Pension forecast on gov.uk.

Workplace pensions

Auto-enrolment means most employees are in a workplace pension. The minimum employer contribution is 3% — check if yours contributes more. Always try to get the full employer match.
