Before you leave: the checklist people forget

Packing gets all the attention, but a few things around the house matter just as much and are easy to forget in the rush: redirect or hold your post, turn the thermostat down (not off, to avoid pipes freezing in winter), empty the fridge of anything that'll spoil, take the bins out one last time, and unplug non-essential electronics. Doing this the night before, not the morning of, avoids the last-minute scramble.

Packing by category

  • Documents — passport, tickets, insurance details, any visa or vaccination paperwork, printed or saved offline in case of no signal
  • Electronics — chargers are the single most forgotten item; a phone charger left behind is the most common one, but don't overlook adapters if travelling abroad
  • Medications — pack enough for the full trip plus a few spare days in case of delays, and keep essential medication in hand luggage, not checked
  • Clothes — pack for the actual forecast rather than the season on the calendar, and always include one layer more than you think you'll need

Looking for a specific type of trip?

This page is a general-purpose list — if you're packing for something more specific, a tailored list tends to cover things a generic one misses: family trips, ski holidays, cruises, campervan trips, honeymoons, beach holidays, hostel stays, and university.
