Frequently asked questions

How do grounding techniques help with anxiety or panic?
Grounding techniques interrupt the spiral of anxious or panicky thoughts by anchoring your attention firmly in the present moment and the physical world — your senses, your breath, your body. Anxiety and panic pull the mind into 'what if' catastrophising; grounding brings it back to 'what is'. Techniques like 5-4-3-2-1 (naming what you can see, hear, touch, smell and taste) and slow breathing with a longer out-breath activate the body's calming response. They're simple, free and effective in the moment. If anxiety or panic is frequent, please speak to your GP — NHS Talking Therapies accept self-referrals. This is general information, not a substitute for professional help. If you're in crisis, the Samaritans are available free, day or night, on 116 123.
