Moving house without the stress: a UK step-by-step guide

Moving is regularly ranked among life's most stressful events — but most of that stress comes from leaving things to the last minute. With a clear plan, it's entirely manageable. Here's how to do it the calm way.

Start early: the moving timeline

The single best thing you can do is start weeks ahead. Around six to eight weeks out, book your removals (or van hire) and begin decluttering — there's no sense paying to move things you'll never use. From a month out, start packing the things you rarely touch, and work through our free moving house checklist so nothing creeps up on you. Booking removals early matters especially around month-end and summer, when demand peaks and good firms fill up.

Who to tell, and packing that pays off

Changing your address is the admin that bites people later. Make a list and work through it — GP and dentist, your bank, employer, the DVLA, your council (for council tax and the electoral roll), insurers, and energy and broadband providers — and set up Royal Mail's redirection for anything you miss. Our free change of address checklist covers the lot. When packing, number every box and keep a box inventory rather than scrawling contents on the side; label boxes by room and put up room labels on the doors of the new place so everything lands where it should.

Surviving moving day

Pack an 'open first' box (or our first night box) with the kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, loo roll, basic toiletries, medications and a change of clothes — so your first night isn't spent rummaging. On the day itself, keep documents, keys and valuables with you rather than on the van, take meter readings at both properties, and feed your helpers. If you have children or pets, arranging for someone to look after them for the day removes a huge amount of pressure. Then put the kettle on — you've earned it.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should you start packing to move house?
Begin with rarely-used items around four to six weeks before the move — out-of-season clothes, books, spare crockery, the loft and garage. Leave daily essentials until the final week, and pack a clearly-marked 'open first' box for the night you arrive. Starting early and packing a few boxes at a time turns an overwhelming job into a manageable one, and gives you the chance to declutter as you go rather than paying to move things you don't want. Aim to have everything except essentials boxed by the day before.
Who do you need to notify when you move house in the UK?
Key people and organisations to tell include: your local council (council tax and the electoral roll), GP and dentist, your bank and any other financial providers, your employer, the DVLA (driving licence and vehicle log book), your insurers, and your energy, water and broadband providers. Set up a Royal Mail redirection to catch post you've forgotten, take meter readings on moving day, and update your address with online shops and subscriptions. Working through a change-of-address checklist means you're far less likely to miss something important like insurance or your licence.
