Getting started: licence and theory
First, apply for your provisional driving licence on GOV.UK — you can do this before your 17th birthday but can't drive until you're 17 (or earlier for certain mobility allowances). You'll need to pass two tests: the theory test (multiple-choice questions plus a hazard perception video section) and the practical driving test. Many people start learning to drive while revising for theory, since the two reinforce each other. Use a free theory revision sheet and hazard perception notes, and get the official Highway Code and theory materials to study from.
Lessons and practice
Most learners take professional lessons with an approved driving instructor (ADI), supplemented by private practice with a qualified, insured supervising driver (usually 21+ and licensed for three years). There's no set number of lessons — it varies hugely by person — so progress matters more than a target. Track how you're doing with a free progress tracker and lesson log, and work through the manoeuvres until they're second nature. Practising between lessons (where you can do so legally and safely) is one of the best ways to build skill and cut the total cost.
Passing and beyond
Book your practical test only when you (and your instructor) judge you genuinely test-ready — driving safely and confidently without prompts — since booking too early usually means a fail and a wait for a retest. A mock test is a great readiness check; our free test day checklist helps you arrive prepared. Once you pass, the learning really continues: new drivers are statistically more at risk in their first year, so consider a Pass Plus course, build experience gradually, and use a free first-year driver guide. Keep on top of the ongoing admin — insurance, tax and MOT — with our car documents organiser.
