What you wear under a graduation gown is a genuinely practical question, since the gown covers most of your outfit but a few parts still show and matter for comfort across what's usually a long day. Smart-but-comfortable is the general aim: graduation ceremonies often involve significant amounts of sitting (during the ceremony itself) and standing (queuing for robing, registration, photos), so an outfit that's comfortable for both, rather than something restrictive purely chosen for photos, tends to work out better in practice. For tops, it's worth knowing that a collar will typically show beneath the hood, so something with a smart collar (a shirt or blouse) tends to look most polished where the hood opens, while the rest of the top is largely hidden. Colour is worth a thought too — something that contrasts nicely with your gown colour photographs better than a similar shade that blends in. Shoes matter more than people often anticipate, given the standing, walking between locations on campus, and photos; comfortable footwear that's also reasonably photo-appropriate is the sweet spot, and if you're wearing anything new, breaking it in beforehand avoids blisters on the day itself. It's also worth packing for changeable weather and temperature — gowns aren't warm, so a layer for if it's cold, and sun protection or an umbrella depending on the forecast, save you from being caught out. Finally, think about whether you'll want a change of outfit for celebrations afterwards, and how you'll carry your gown home (a garment bag keeps it presentable if you want to keep it as a keepsake or need to return it in good condition).
