What is Ramadan? A guide to the holy month

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.

The fast

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from before dawn (Suhoor) until sunset (Iftar). The fast involves abstaining from food, drink and other physical needs during daylight hours. The pre-dawn meal is Suhoor; the meal breaking the fast at sunset is Iftar, often beginning with dates and water.

The five pillars connection

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month is also a time of intensified prayer — many Muslims pray the Tarawih (extra evening prayers) and aim to recite the complete Quran during the month.

Duration

Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the crescent moon, and ends with Eid al-Fitr — a joyful celebration marking the end of the fast.
