There are two major Eid celebrations in the Islamic calendar, each with distinct significance.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. It is a joyful celebration of community, gratitude and the completion of a month of fasting and prayer. Families gather, gifts are exchanged, and sweet foods are shared. Eidiyah — a gift of money — is traditionally given to children.
Eid al-Adha falls approximately 70 days after Eid al-Fitr and commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. An animal is sacrificed and the meat shared with family, neighbours and those in need. It also coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage.
Both Eids follow the Islamic lunar calendar and move approximately 11 days earlier each year. Confirm dates with your local mosque. In 2026, Eid al-Fitr falls around 20 March and Eid al-Adha around 27 May.
