What is a wake? Tradition, format and planning

A wake is a gathering after a funeral where family and friends come together to remember the person who has died, share food and drink, and support one another.

When does a wake happen?

Traditionally on the same day as the funeral, usually immediately after the committal. It can be at the family home, a hired venue, a pub, or anywhere the family chooses.

What happens at a wake?

There is no strict format. Usually: food and drink, conversation, shared memories, sometimes a short toast. A display of photos is common. Some families play the deceased's favourite music.

How do you plan a wake?

Book the venue as soon as possible after the death. Estimate numbers from those attending the funeral. Catering is usually finger food, sandwiches, or a buffet. Our free funeral thank you cards can be sent to those who attended.
