It's a popular crafting approach that's creative, satisfying, often cheap, and kinder to the planet.
They're related but different. Recycling breaks materials down to make new raw materials (melting glass, pulping paper). Upcycling keeps the item largely intact and reuses or transforms it as it is, usually creatively — so it takes less energy and the result is something new and often more valuable than the original. The closely-related term 'repurposing' means giving an item a new use.
