Side hustle income is taxable in the UK. Here is the key information.
If your total gross side hustle income is under £1,000 in a tax year, you do not need to declare it. Over £1,000: you must register for self-assessment, even if your costs exceed your income.
Selling on eBay, Vinted, Etsy, Airbnb, freelance work, tutoring, driving for Uber — all count if they are consistent trading activity (not just clearing out your loft once). HMRC has received data from many platforms since 2024.
Register online at HMRC.gov.uk by 5th October following the tax year you first need to declare. You will receive a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) and can then file a self-assessment return.
