Progressive overload explained — the principle behind every workout

Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed on the body during training. It is the foundational principle of all effective fitness programming.

Why it matters

The body adapts to training stimuli. When you do the same workout at the same intensity every session, adaptation stops and progress plateaus. Progressive overload prevents this by continuously providing a new stimulus for the body to adapt to.

How to apply it

The key rule

Only increase one variable at a time. Increasing weight, reps and sets simultaneously risks injury. Small, consistent progress compounds significantly over months.
