Potty training is one of the more fraught parenting milestones. Here is what the evidence and experience say works.
What works
- Starting when the child shows readiness signs (not based on age alone)
- Going straight to pants, not pull-ups during the day (pull-ups feel like nappies)
- Offering the potty every 20-30 minutes initially
- A visible reward chart — children are motivated by stickers and praise
- Staying calm about accidents
What doesn't work
- Forcing it before they are ready
- Showing frustration or disappointment at accidents
- Switching between nappies and pants (confusing)
- Comparing to siblings or friends
