Grounding explained — a tool for anxiety and overwhelm

Grounding refers to a set of simple techniques that help bring your attention back to the present moment, used to manage anxiety, panic, overwhelm, or feeling disconnected. The idea is to 'ground' yourself in the here and now — through your senses, breath or surroundings — rather than being swept up in distressing thoughts or feelings.

How it works

When we're anxious or panicking, our mind races and the body's stress response kicks in. Grounding deliberately shifts focus onto something concrete and neutral — what you can see, touch, hear; the feeling of your feet on the floor; a slow breath — which can interrupt the spiral and help the nervous system settle. It gives you a moment of steadiness and a sense of control.

An important note

Grounding is a helpful coping tool for difficult moments — not a treatment for anxiety or any mental health condition. If anxiety affects your daily life, please speak to your GP; in the UK you can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies, and the Samaritans are available any time on 116 123.
