Fitness tracking terms explained — reps, sets, macros and more

Understanding the basics makes tracking workouts and progress clearer. Here are the key terms.

Sets and reps

A rep (repetition) is one complete movement. A set is a group of reps performed without rest. Three sets of ten reps (3 x 10) means you do 10 reps, rest, 10 reps, rest, 10 reps.

Progressive overload

Gradually increasing the weight, reps or sets over time to keep the body adapting. This is the core principle of strength training — the workout log helps you track it.

HIIT

High-Intensity Interval Training: short bursts of maximum effort (20-40 seconds) alternated with rest. Efficient for cardio fitness in less time.

Macros

Macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates and fats. Tracking macros (usually alongside calorie counting) helps with body composition goals.
