Diwali (also spelled Deepavali) is the Hindu, Sikh and Jain Festival of Lights, celebrated over five days each autumn.
For Hindus, Diwali most commonly marks the return of Prince Rama from exile, as told in the Ramayana. Diyas (clay oil lamps) were lit to guide his way home. For Sikhs, it marks Bandi Chhor Divas — the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from captivity. For Jains, it marks the attainment of nirvana by Mahavira.
Diwali 2025: 20 October. Diwali 2026: 8 November. The date changes annually with the Hindu lunar calendar.
