Box breathing explained — a simple calming technique

Box breathing (also called square breathing) is a simple breathing technique used to calm the body and mind. It involves breathing in four equal phases — each held for the same count — forming a 'box': breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold.

How to do it

If a count of 4 feels too long or short, adjust it — the equal phases matter more than the exact number.

Why it helps

Slow, controlled breathing helps activate the body's natural 'rest and digest' response, easing the racing heart and shallow breathing that come with stress and anxiety. The counting also gives your mind something steady to focus on, drawing attention away from anxious thoughts. It's discreet, free and can be done anywhere — before a stressful meeting, in a difficult moment, or to wind down at night. It's reportedly used in high-pressure professions for exactly this reason.

A note

Box breathing is a helpful self-help tool for everyday stress, not a treatment for anxiety disorders. If anxiety affects your daily life, please speak to your GP — in the UK you can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies. Our free breathing exercises card and grounding techniques have more, and our anxiety toolkit gathers gentle tools together.
