Active recall — the most effective revision technique explained

Active recall is the practice of retrieving information from memory — rather than passively reading or reviewing it. It is the single most evidence-backed revision technique.

Why it works

Every time you successfully retrieve a piece of information, the neural pathway encoding it is strengthened. The effort of trying to remember — and struggling slightly — is what creates durable memory. Reading notes again does not produce this retrieval effort.
