How to study effectively: the evidence-based techniques that work

Most students study in ways that feel productive but produce weak results. Here is what the evidence actually shows.

The techniques with the strongest evidence

Active recall and spaced repetition are the two most robustly evidenced study techniques (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006; Cepeda et al, 2006). The techniques most students use (and why they don't work)

Re-reading notes produces familiarity, not recall. Highlighting creates the illusion of engagement without active processing. Cramming produces short-term retention but poor long-term memory (information crammed the night before an exam is largely forgotten within 24 hours). These feel like studying because they are effortful — but cognitive effort and learning are not the same thing.

A practical study system

Before the session: identify the specific topic (not 'chemistry' but 'rates of reaction'). During the session: read once for understanding, then close materials and write down everything you remember (active recall). After the session: compare your recall against the source and flag gaps. How many hours per day should a student study?
Quality matters far more than duration. 3–4 hours of focused active recall study produces better outcomes than 8 hours of passive re-reading. Beyond 4 hours, cognitive fatigue significantly reduces retention. Multiple short sessions with breaks (the Pomodoro technique) produce better results than marathon single sessions.
How should past papers be used?
Under timed, exam conditions — not open-book. Mark immediately using the official mark scheme. Analyse every error: was it a knowledge gap (revise the topic), a technique error (practise the skill), or a time management issue (improve pacing)? The analysis is as valuable as the practice.
