Lunar New Year marks the start of a new year on the traditional lunisolar calendar. It is the most important celebration across much of Asia and among Asian diaspora communities worldwide.
Lunar New Year is celebrated in China (as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival), Vietnam (as Tết), Korea (as Seollal), Mongolia and by Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean diaspora communities globally. While the dates and specific traditions vary, the core themes — family reunion, renewal, good fortune and driving out bad luck — are shared.
Each year is associated with one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The animal of the year is believed to influence the character of those born during it. 2026 is the Year of the Horse.
Lunar New Year 2026 falls on 17th February. The celebration lasts 15 days and ends with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.
