About Diwali — the Festival of Lights explained

Diwali, also known as Deepawali or Deepavali, is the Hindu Festival of Lights — one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit Deepavali, meaning 'row of lamps'.

When is Diwali?

Diwali falls in October or November each year, on the 15th day of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar. The exact date moves each year. Diwali 2026 falls on 29th October.

What does Diwali celebrate?

For Hindus, Diwali most commonly celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. Jains celebrate the spiritual enlightenment of Mahavira. Sikhs celebrate the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from prison. Each tradition shares the central theme of light over darkness.
