Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, at a good pace, and with appropriate expression and phrasing — and crucially while still understanding what's being read. It's a key bridge between simply decoding words (sounding them out) and reading for meaning: a fluent reader isn't using all their effort just to work out the words, so they have attention left to comprehend and enjoy the text. To track it, note over time how a child is doing across those strands — accuracy (how many errors, whether they're still laboriously sounding out), pace (smooth versus word-by-word), expression (do they read with feeling and natural phrasing), and understanding (can they retell it or answer questions). Recording this regularly helps teachers and parents see genuine progress, spot which sounds or words are sticking points, decide when a child is ready to move up a level, and — importantly — celebrate how far a reader has come.
