Frequently asked questions
What is spaced repetition and why does it work?
Spaced repetition is a study technique where you review material at increasing intervals over time — for example a day after learning it, then a few days later, then a week, then a fortnight, and so on — rather than cramming it all at once or re-reading it constantly. It works because of how memory functions: each time you successfully recall something just as you're starting to forget it, you strengthen that memory and it lasts longer, so spacing the reviews out (and stretching the gaps as the material sticks) embeds it far more durably into long-term memory than massed cramming, which fades fast. It's one of the most robustly evidence-backed learning techniques there is. It works best combined with active recall — actually testing yourself rather than passively re-reading — which is why flashcards are the classic tool, ideally pulled out for review on a schedule. If you knew a topic easily, stretch the next gap; if you struggled, shorten it. A little planning turns it from a vague idea into a system that genuinely makes you remember more for longer.
