Frequently asked questions

Why is active recall more effective than re-reading?
Decades of cognitive science research (the 'testing effect') consistently show that actively retrieving information from memory — through self-testing, flashcards or explaining aloud — produces far stronger, more durable learning than passively re-reading notes. Re-reading feels productive because the material becomes familiar, but familiarity isn't the same as recall. Combined with spaced repetition (reviewing at increasing intervals), active recall is the most evidence-backed revision strategy there is.
Is it really free?
