Leprechaun trap planner — free printable kids' craft project

Building a leprechaun trap is a delightful St Patrick's Day tradition, especially popular with children, that blends imaginative play with hands-on making (it's often used as a fun STEM or craft project in schools and at home). The idea: in the days before St Patrick's Day, children design and build a contraption intended to 'catch' a leprechaun — the mischievous little folklore characters said to be drawn to gold and shiny things. Traps range from simple decorated boxes with a ramp, to elaborate creations with trapdoors, trick floors and tempting 'bait' like gold coins, rainbows and glitter. Then on St Patrick's Eve, children set their traps before bed — and in the morning, the cheeky leprechaun has (of course!) escaped, but left behind evidence of his visit: perhaps the trap knocked over, tiny green footprints, a bit of mischief, gold chocolate coins, or a little note. It's the magic of the morning-after surprise that children adore. The activity is wonderful because it sparks creativity and problem-solving (how will you catch him?), uses recycled bits and craft materials, builds excitement, and creates a bit of seasonal magic.
