Frequently asked questions
What should you check when viewing a house?
After a few viewings, properties blur together, so it pays to score each one consistently on the things that matter. Inside, check the general condition and any signs of damp, mould or cracks; the size and layout; the state of the kitchen and bathrooms (the costly rooms to replace); and storage. Outside and around, weigh up the garden, parking, the area and neighbours, and your commute. Ask the agent why the owners are selling, how long it's been on the market, whether there's a chain, and — crucially in the UK — whether it's freehold or leasehold (and if leasehold, the remaining years and the service charge). A score sheet turns a vague gut feeling into a fair comparison. This is general information, not financial or legal advice; always get a survey and professional advice before buying.
