Frequently asked questions

How do you declutter a garage or shed?
The garage and shed are where clutter goes to hide, so they can feel especially daunting — but the same room-by-room logic applies, just broken into zones. Pick a dry day and a few hours, and work one zone at a time (tools, garden gear, sports and leisure, general storage) rather than emptying the whole thing at once and overwhelming yourself. The most effective method is to take everything in a zone out so you can see it, then sort with the four-pile system: keep, bin, donate, sell. Be ruthless about the broken, the perished, the rusted and the 'we'll never use this' — garages accumulate a lot of genuine rubbish. Watch for damp-damaged items, and crucially, dispose of hazardous things like old paint, chemicals and batteries properly (your council will have guidance) rather than binning them. Once you've cleared out, store smart: get things off the floor with shelving and wall hooks, use clear labelled boxes for like items, and keep frequently-used things accessible. Set yourself a concrete goal — fitting the car in, a clear workbench, finding things easily — to keep you motivated. Little and often maintains it afterwards.
