Skincare for beginners: the ingredients that work and the ones you can skip

The skincare industry profits from complexity. Here are the three ingredients with genuine evidence behind them.

The three non-negotiables

SPF (daily sun protection) prevents 80% of UV-related skin ageing and is the most evidence-backed anti-ageing intervention available. Retinol (vitamin A derivative) increases cell turnover, stimulates collagen production and reduces fine lines — the only topical ingredient with 40+ years of clinical research. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces pore appearance, controls oil, brightens and is well-tolerated by sensitive skin. These three, used consistently, outperform any other combination.

What most people get wrong

The product rotation problem: many people cycle through new products every few weeks before any can take effect. Retinol requires 12 weeks minimum for anti-ageing effects to become visible. Introducing one new product at a time (and leaving 2–4 weeks before adding another) allows proper assessment of what is working. Use our free skincare routine tracker to monitor the 4-week changes.

The honest cost breakdown

An effective skincare routine costs approximately £20–50/month — not £200. SPF moisturiser (La Roche-Posay Anthelios, EltaMD): £15–25. Gentle cleanser (CeraVe, La Roche-Posay): £8–15. Retinol serum (The Ordinary 0.3%, Paula's Choice): £8–35. Niacinamide serum (The Ordinary, Inkey List): £5–10. The most expensive products are not more effective than mid-range scientifically-formulated alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Does price predict skincare product quality?
No — above approximately £15–20, price correlates very poorly with efficacy. The expensive packaging, marketing and brand positioning of luxury skincare does not translate to superior active ingredients or better outcomes. The most extensively studied ingredients (retinol, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, SPF filters) are available in effective concentrations from budget-to-mid-range formulations.
At what age should a skincare routine start?
SPF from any age (the sun doesn't discriminate by age). A basic cleanser + moisturiser + SPF routine from teenagers onwards is appropriate. Retinol is typically introduced from the mid-to-late 20s onwards for anti-ageing purposes; it can be used younger for acne management under dermatologist guidance.
