Day 1: the non-negotiables
Change the locks — you don't know how many copies of keys exist. Read and photograph all meters. Find the stopcock (water mains shutoff), fuse box and gas meter. Test all smoke alarms. These four tasks take 30 minutes and could save significant cost or harm. Use our free new home first week checklist for the complete day-by-day breakdown.
Week 1: getting set up
Register with a local GP — not always immediate, but register promptly as waiting times can be significant. Set up utilities (if not already transferred). Order broadband — allow 2–4 weeks for installation. Update your driving licence address at DVLA online (required within 30 days of moving). Work through our free change of address checklist systematically.
Month 1: settling in
Walk through the home with fresh eyes and note anything that needs attention — leaks, cracked windows, faulty switches, damp. Photograph all rooms for insurance purposes. Review your home insurance to ensure the cover is appropriate for the new property. Introduce yourself to immediate neighbours — the relationship established in the first weeks lasts for years.
