How to start meal planning: a beginner's guide

Meal planning saves money, reduces food waste and takes the daily stress out of 'what is for dinner'. Here is how to start.

Step 1: plan one week at a time

Start with just dinners — breakfast and lunch are easier to improvise. Use our free weekly meal planner to write down seven evening meals before you shop.

Step 2: build a shortlist of favourites

Write down 15-20 meals your household reliably enjoys. These become your rotation. Planning is easier when you are choosing from a known list rather than starting from scratch each week.

Step 3: shop to the plan

Once meals are planned, write the ingredients list before shopping. Use our free categorised shopping list to organise by aisle — it cuts time in the supermarket and reduces impulse buys.

Step 4: batch where possible

If a recipe serves four and you are cooking for two, batch cook and freeze half. Reduces waste, saves time, and gives you a fallback on busy days.
