What to pack in your hospital bag: the complete guide

Most hospital bag guides tell you to pack everything. Here is a more considered list — what you actually need versus what takes up space.

The non-negotiables

Pregnancy notes and birth plan (2 copies). MATB1 form. ID. Maternity pads (the hospital's are never enough). Comfortable, old pyjamas or a nightgown you do not mind getting stained. A dark towel. Snacks and drinks for labour. Phone charger. Change for parking.

What to pack for the baby

3–5 babygros in both newborn and 0–3 sizes (you do not know which will fit). The same number of vests. Nappies and cotton wool for newborn skin. A going-home outfit. Most importantly: a correctly fitted car seat in the car — you cannot leave without it.

What not to bother with

Labour entertainment that requires concentration (you will not be able to focus). Expensive toiletries (they will get lost or knocked over). New pyjamas (they will be ruined). Heavy books. More than two outfits for yourself beyond the birth. Use our free hospital bag checklist to pack methodically.

Frequently asked questions

Can my birth partner's bag go in the same hospital bag?
Better to keep them separate — a small backpack for the birth partner means they can leave and return without disturbing your main bag. Their priorities: phone charger, snacks, change of clothes, something to read or watch, cash for parking and vending machines.
What do I need for an elective caesarean specifically?
Compression stockings (usually provided but confirm). Longer-lasting pads. Loose, high-waisted underwear and PJs. Stool softeners. The recovery is different — ask your midwife for a specific packing list.
