How to organise your health records at home

Organised health records save time, reduce stress at appointments and can be genuinely important in emergencies. Here is how to build a simple system.

The home medical file

A single A4 ring binder holds everything: completed medical history, current medication log, appointment letters, test results and insurance documents. Divide with tabs by category (personal info, medications, appointments, letters). Update the medication log monthly and the medical history whenever something changes.

The wallet card

A laminated emergency information card in your wallet covers allergies, blood type, current medications and emergency contacts. This is particularly valuable for people with chronic conditions, those managing elderly relatives' care, or anyone who travels frequently.

Digital backup

Photograph the completed medical history and medication log and save them in a phone album or cloud folder accessible to a trusted contact. A phone works when a file does not.
