Start small and grow what you'll eat
The classic beginner's mistake is doing too much too soon — a huge plot of ambitious crops that becomes overwhelming and disheartening. Start small: a few pots, a grow bag, or a single raised bed. Grow things you actually like to eat and that give a good return for the effort. The most reliable, rewarding beginner crops are courgettes (wildly productive), beans, salad leaves (cut-and-come-again for weeks), radishes (ready in a month), tomatoes (in a sunny spot), potatoes (even in bags) and herbs. Our free vegetable garden planner helps you plan.
Understanding the growing year
Successful growing is mostly about timing. Spring is the main sowing season — many crops start indoors or under cover, then plant out after the last frost (which varies by region, but roughly mid-to-late May for tender crops). Summer is for watering, feeding, and harvesting, plus 'successional sowing' (sowing salad and quick crops little and often for a continuous supply). Autumn is for harvesting, planting overwintering crops like garlic, and tidying up. Our free garden jobs by season checklist keeps you on track. Working with the seasons, not against them, is the key to success.
You don't need much space or kit
Grow-your-own is wonderfully accessible. Herbs, salad, chillies and tomatoes all grow happily in pots on a balcony, patio or sunny windowsill. A single raised bed or a few grow bags produces a surprising amount. The essential kit is minimal — some compost, containers or a bed, a few packets of seeds, a watering can and a trowel. The RHS website is an outstanding free resource for what to grow and when. Start this season with one or two easy crops, enjoy the (genuinely better-tasting) results, and expand as your confidence grows. This is general guidance for UK growing.
