The most important variable in gratitude practice is specificity. 'I am grateful for my health' is less effective than 'I am grateful I walked to work this morning and noticed the blossom on the cherry trees'. Specific gratitude requires active attention and produces stronger neural activation than generic statements. The grateful letter
One of the most powerful single gratitude exercises: write a detailed letter to someone who has positively influenced your life but whom you have never properly thanked. Then visit them and read it aloud. Martin Seligman's 2005 study found this 'gratitude visit' produced the largest single-session increase in wellbeing of any positive psychology intervention tested — with effects lasting 4 weeks. The letter alone (without the visit) still produces significant benefit.
