How to plan and host a dinner party at home

The secret to a good dinner party is not the food — it is the host's calmness. That comes from good preparation. Here is how to plan one properly.

Plan the menu first, then shop

Choose a menu with at least one dish that can be made ahead. Starter: something cold or assembled. Main: a braise or roast that needs no last-minute attention. Dessert: made the day before. Nothing should require your full concentration when guests are present. Print a free menu card for each place setting.

The table matters more than you think

Candles, cloth napkins or quality paper napkins, a simple floral or botanical centrepiece, and place cards if there are more than six. These details signal that thought has been put in — and guests notice. Water glasses filled before guests sit down. Background music playing as they arrive.

The host's rule

Once guests arrive, stop perfecting. The kitchen can look imperfect. The risotto can be slightly over. A host who is present and relaxed makes a far better evening than one who disappears to cook the perfect dish. Prepare everything so you do not have to.

Six to eight. Fewer than four is an intimate dinner; more than eight requires a buffet format or extremely smooth hosting. Six is the sweet spot — one conversation around the table is possible.
What time should dinner be served?
Aim for guests arriving at 7pm for drinks, seated at 7:45-8pm. Starters at 8pm, main at 9pm, dessert at 10pm. By 11pm guests can leave naturally.
