Getting organised: the practical foundations
Start by getting the essential information in one place: medications and the schedule (our free medication schedule), medical history and conditions, GP and key contacts, and important documents. A care folder or binder that any family member or carer can refer to is invaluable, especially in an emergency or if care is shared. Note appointment dates, and prepare for GP and hospital visits in advance (our free appointment prep sheet helps make short appointments count). If care is shared between family members, a daily log helps everyone stay coordinated.
The support that's available
You don't have to do it alone, and many people don't realise what's available. Contact the parent's local council to request a Needs Assessment (free) — this assesses what care and support they're entitled to. As a carer, you're entitled to your own Carer's Assessment. Other support includes: Attendance Allowance (a non-means-tested benefit for those over State Pension age needing care), Carer's Allowance, the parent's GP and district nurses, local carer support organisations, and charities like Age UK and Carers UK, which offer free advice. Power of Attorney (set up while the parent still has capacity) is something to discuss early — it's much harder to arrange later.
Looking after yourself too
Carer burnout is real and common — you cannot pour from an empty cup. Caring for a parent while often juggling work and your own family is genuinely demanding, and feelings of guilt, frustration, grief and exhaustion are normal, not failings. Accept help when offered, use respite care so you get genuine breaks, stay connected to your own life and relationships, and don't dismiss your own wellbeing. Carers UK (0808 808 7777) offers free support and advice. If you're struggling, speak to your GP. Protecting your own health isn't selfish — it's essential to being able to care at all.
