Getting organised
Caring involves keeping track of a huge amount — medications, appointments, conditions, contacts and daily routines — much of which ends up held in the carer's head. Writing it down lightens that mental load and is invaluable if anyone else needs to step in. Our free medication chart, appointment tracker, daily care log and handover notes help you keep things straight. Critically, make a carer's emergency plan for what would happen if you yourself were suddenly unable to care — it's vital peace of mind.
Your rights and the support available
Many carers don't realise how much support exists. In the UK, if you provide regular care you're entitled to a free Carer's Assessment from your local council, which looks at your own needs and what help you might get — request one even if you're managing, as it can open doors. Depending on circumstances there may be financial support such as Carer's Allowance (check GOV.UK for current eligibility). The charity Carers UK offers excellent advice and a helpline, and local carers' centres provide practical and emotional support, including respite care to give you a break. Your loved one's GP and any care team are also key contacts. It's well worth getting registered as a carer with their GP surgery too.
Looking after yourself — this matters
Carer burnout is real and common, and you cannot pour from an empty cup — looking after yourself isn't selfish, it's essential for being able to keep caring. Take breaks (respite care exists for exactly this), accept help when it's offered and ask for it when it's not, and try to hold on to some time, interests and connections of your own. Watch for the signs of being overwhelmed — exhaustion, low mood, resentment, isolation — and treat them as a signal to reach out, not soldier on. Talk to other carers, who truly understand. And please don't neglect your own health: see your GP for your own needs, and if you're struggling to cope, support is there. In the UK the Carers UK helpline and the Samaritans (116 123) can both help. You matter too.
